Secrets

Ellie Friedman

secrets were fun to
keep
hold
collect between the thighs
until they decided
skirts were curtains
to be pulled
and secrets were answers to loud questions in cafeterias
as though that was the whole definition of a human.
as though you are just a question and the louder the leering, the quicker to curtain call.

as you get older you learn
secrets are only interesting when you don’t know them

in elementary
I thought people were like cups
absorbing the world
half full of water
half full of air
now I know
and I wish I didn’t
they are murals of broken glass
cracking and spilling
accidentally Slicing
your pieces are all there
arranged on the floor like a pattern
like a mouse trap
You are not perfect
You are a Person
