First of all, congratulations! This is probably a super exciting (and possibly nerve-wracking) time for you, but regardless, you should relish every moment. To really solidify your new adult status, get yourself registered to vote! This is a relatively simple process that you can complete online and you will surely feel empowered afterward. Becoming an adult also makes you eligible to become an organ donor. If that is something you wish to register for, make a trip to your local DMV or complete the online form so your license can be adjusted to reflect that decision.
In my opinion, the best thing about being newly 18 is freedom! There are so many opportunities open to you now. You can buy a lottery ticket, book a hotel room, go to a concert, skydive…and sue someone! To celebrate, maybe try something you weren’t able to before. Treat yourself and your friends to a hotel stay or to a rated-R movie that you’ve been wanting to see. Splurge on a concert for your favorite artist or go to an escape room. You can also travel internationally or go camping on your own.
However, keep in mind that your 18th birthday doesn’t have to be extravagant. While this is a huge milestone in your life and signifies the beginning of adulthood, there’s nothing wrong with opting for something low-key like hosting a small dinner party or movie night with a group of friends. Truly, the options are endless and can be completely tailored to your interests.
Despite this being one of the biggest milestones in your life, don’t overthink the celebration. Turning 18 is an exciting time in your life, filled with choices, responsibilities, and opportunities you weren’t offered before. All these changes can be overwhelming, so no matter how you choose to celebrate, make sure it is as stress-free as possible. Choose an activity that is truly enjoyable for you, and you’ll find your 18th birthday celebration unforgettable!
