Dear Sofia…

Dear+Sofia...

Dear Sofia,

How do I cope with academic pressure?

Sincerely, Stressed

Dear Stressed,

With increasing academic competition at Vestal High School and, for seniors, college applications in progress and class rank being released, you’re definitely not alone in the struggle against academic pressure. The best advice I have for this would be to not compare yourself to other peers! Set a realistic standard for yourself and hold yourself accountable rather than setting a benchmark based on those around you. Make sure you are trying your best and know that that is paramount.

While your grades are certainly important, they aren’t what makes you who you are. Remember that you are so much more than a number on a transcript! Personality will help you in many areas, too. Academic success is an important part to success in the future, so make sure to put in as much effort as you can, without compromising your physical or mental well-being. If you need help, don’t be afraid to ask peers, teachers, or NHS tutors! The VHS community is here to help.

I know simply caring less isn’t that simple, though! So, I do have some self-care strategies that may be helpful to keeping yourself in good health (in every sense of the word), and to studying effectively. The first would be to take breaks while studying! Set a timer for, say, thirty minutes, work hard, and then force yourself to take a break. Stretch, watch a few TikToks, eat a snack – anything that isn’t school-related. Then, get back to work and repeat! Maintaining good nutrition is also very important. Staying hydrated and eating fruits and vegetables daily becomes fuel to keep your brain sharp and prevent burnout. Getting at least eight hours of sleep each night also helps! Last but not least, make time for you! Having a social life and spending time with loved ones is just as important to your mental health as taking care of your body is. Carve out some time each week to spend with friends or family or go to an extracurricular activity that you enjoy.

Sincerely,

Sofia
