Introduction
We all spend a lot of time focused on the action going on inside Vestal High School. There are exams and classes to study for, sports seasons to keep you occupied, and an unending amount of after-school clubs and activities to invest our time into. But once that dismissal bell rings, once that late bus takes you home or your practice is finally over, what’s actually going on in the world around us?
That question is what Beyond the Bear Den is all about— this column is your monthly guide to the Vestal area, the 607, all the local know-how, and must-know events that matter to you. From new opening food places to the dates of our biggest community events, we’re stepping out of the Den to explore. February might get a reputation for cold weather and cabin fever, but there’s actually plenty to do; if you know where to look.
Want to go beyond the Bear Den? Here’s your chance.
February Events you won’t want to miss!

Vestal Musicians Jam Session – Feb 15
Local musicians from around town are gonna be hosting a casual jam night, a great excuse to hear music live, join in if you play, or just meet new people who dig music too.
Vestal Father-Daughter Ball – Feb 21
A classic community for dads and daughters, this semi-formal ball is happening at the Doubletree by Hilton in Binghamton and is sure to be a fun night out with music and dancing! There are definitely memories to be made.
Just Dance – Feb 24
Presented by the Katie Barlow Dance Projects at 500 Clubhouse Rd in Vestal, this local dance event offers a range of styles and performances throughout the day! There’s always something new to try around town, so give it a shot and try it out!
Family Swim – Feb 28
Vestal High School is holding a family swim every Saturday through February 28th from 12-3 pm! Perfect for February when outdoor stuff is simply far too cold and you just want to splash around without freezing yourself in the process.
What’s going on around town anyway?
Even without a marquee event happening every day, Vestal and the surrounding area are full of weekly or casual things to do:
Community Get-Togethers & Socials
Meetup groups in Vestal host things like jam sessions, social nights, and hobby meetups mid-month, which are great ways to break the winter slump.
Seasonal Outdoor Fun
Walks on the Vestal Rail Trail or visits to Otsiningo Park or local recreation spots are still options if you’re willing to bundle up because that winter scenery can be gorgeous.
School & Local Activities
Around the end of February, you’ll find things like school festivals and performances (like musicals) in the broader area, so keep an eye on local school calendars!
Closing
February might feel slow, but if you look for it, something is going on just about every week! Whether it’s a community dinner, a jam session, a family swim, or just getting together with friends to beat winter boredom.
So bundle up, mark your calendar, and take a break from just schoolwork. There’s real local life happening, Beyond the Bear Den!
Stay curious,
