On October 26, the Vestal Marching Band took the field for the last time in competition. Their seven minute show, entitled “Mirage”, included many Arabian inspired pieces of music. It is divided into three segments, beginning with “Arabian Nights,” “Oasis,” and culminating in “Sandstorm.” At the New York State Field Band Championships, held in the Syracuse dome, the band placed 4th in their division and was the highest scoring band in the southern tier, with a score of 82.225. This will be their final score, and it is among the highest that the marching band has ever earned.
The marching band is led by band director Ms. Pham and assistant band director Mr. Miller, as well as many more specialized instructors for various instruments and the color guard. Additionally, the band has many student leaders. These include the senior drum major (conductor) Susie Hirst, junior drum major Mika Friedman, and multiple section leaders for brass, percussion, guard, etc.
The Vestal Marching band began rehearsing in mid-August with an intensive two week long band camp. It is there that they set the foundation for the rest of the marching season through grueling 12-hour days of learning drill, memorizing music, and understanding how to be a cohesive band. In just two weeks, they learn the entire show, and the next two months are dedicated to fine tuning and improving it. During the fall, band students work tirelessly in the heat, rain, and often freezing cold in order to present a show they are proud to perform. They are extraordinarily proud of their achievements this season, and look forward to what the next year may bring!
