Introduction
We all spend a lot of time focused on the action going on inside Vestal High School. There are exams and classes to study for, there are sports seasons to keep you occupied, and there’s an unending amount of after-school clubs and activities to invest our time into. But once that dismissal bell rings, once that late bus takes you home or your practice is finally over, what’s actually going on in the world around us?
That question is what Beyond the Bear Den is all about. This column is your monthly guide to the Vestal area, the 607, and all the local know-how and must-know events that matter to you. From new opening food places to the dates of our biggest community events, we’re stepping out of the Den to explore. For this month, we’re kicking off the holiday season and finding ways to get your holiday cheer on before the new year hits.
Want to go beyond the Bear Den? Here’s your chance.
Must Attend December Events
This December is going to be packed with festive opportunities to take a break from the schoolwork grind and soak up that holiday goodness right here in Vestal.
The Vestal Tree Lighting
The Town of Vestal is hosting its annual Christmas Tree Lighting & Sing-A-Long! This is a classic community tradition, so grab your friends, wear some very warm clothing, and get ready for carols and unending holiday spirit. The event will be taking place on Friday, December 5th, 2025, starting at 6:30 pm at the Four Corners Gazebo, where it always is!
Vestal Community Band Concert
Looking to relax with some great festive music and support our local ensembles? The Vestal Community Band is hosting its annual Holiday Concert soon! This free event is a wonderful way to enjoy classic seasonal tunes, and it’ll be right in our neighborhood. The band features all local musicians, including some Vestal High alums, staff, and students, too! The event will be taking place on Thursday, December 18th, 2025, starting at 7:00 pm at the Oakdale Commons; be sure to stop by!
Holiday Artisan Market
Need a unique holiday gift for a family member or friend? Check out our local artisan markets! You can find handmade jewelry, treats, and even art while supporting local artists! The market will be open from December 11th, 4:00-7:00 pm to December 12th, 4:00-7:00 pm— exclusively at 840 Upper Front Street, Binghamton. Don’t miss out on this annual market!
New Delicious Food Spots— on the Parkway!
It’s time to talk about the biggest new arrivals on the Vestal Parkway, good eats without the long driving distance!
Ernesto’s Mexican Food
Old meets new with the arrival of Ernesto’s Mexican Food! The long vacant Vestal Diner on the parkway has been brought back to life, and with a new spicy twist to boot! Offering a full menu of authentic and traditional Mexican cuisine, the real buzz is that they’ve successfully transitioned the space while bringing much-needed variety to our local sit-down dining options. This is a perfect dinner spot for a celebratory meal or a family night out!
QDOBA Mexican Eats
The rumors are true! QDOBA, the Mexican spot known for its customizable bowls, burritos, and most importantly, free queso and guac on any entree (Beat that, Chipotle and Moe’s!), has opened its first location in the area right here on the Vestal Parkway! This is a major test run for the brand in our area, so be sure to check it out!! It’s a quick and fresh option perfect for a lunch break or a place to eat with friends!
What’s going on around town anyway?
Enjoy walking the Vestal Rail Trail? Well, it just got even better! Phase three of the expansion just recently opened, adding half a mile to the historic walking site and, more importantly, adding a parking lot on Vestal Road. Lace up your sneakers, grab your warm coats, scarves, and hats, and go on a chilly walk in the new section! It’s an easy way to get some fresh air and exercise without even having to drive to Ithaca.
Closing
That’s about the end of our inaugural journey, Beyond the Bear Den! As the calendar moves into December and beyond, remember to take a few breaks and enjoy the unique holiday events our town has to offer. Whether you’re cheering on our community band, finding one-of-a-kind gifts at the artisan market, or just trying out some new Mexican food on the Parkway, it’s good to know that the local area provides plenty of ways to enjoy the season.
Enjoy your holiday break, and we’ll be back with all the latest news Beyond the Bear Den in January!
I hope this column has provided a helpful guide for life beyond VHS this month.
