In honor of St. Patrick’s day being right around the corner, and some inspiration of my article I had written back in November, I thought to write another edition similar to that one. So, without further ado, let me explain to you the history and importance of Irish American Heritage Month!
History
First, let’s talk about the building block towards Irish American Heritage Month being created. Did you know that originally St. Patrick’s day is a religious holiday to honor St. Patrick, whom had introduced Christianity to Ireland in the 5th century? Out of admiration and gratitude, the lovely day flourished into a celebration that eventually overtime became oriented with all things Irish. This special day was celebrated loudly and proudly during the world’s first St. Patrick’s day parade on March 17th, of 1762. This special parade didn’t just celebrate St. Patrick’s introduction to Ireland, but to also feature and honor Irish soldiers who had served in the English military. This parade became an annual tradition overtime, finally leading up to the U.S. Congress declaring the entire month of March as Irish American Heritage Month in 1991.
Importance
Now, I know what you may be thinking; what’s so important and significant about this month? In short, this month is a time of celebration between the strong bond of America and Ireland, while also honoring the Irish-American citizens from the past all the way up to the present. We should take all months like this into more consideration, because everyone, regardless of ethnicity or race, deserves a special time to be celebrated for.
