Adversity with Diversity

Adversity with Diversity

Anjali Patel

They admire the silks we drape ourselves with
The spices we sell street upon street
They love the color the sun kisses us with
The thick locks that frame the faces mistreat

But they do not ever want to be us
They do not desire the poverty we face
They only love the picture-perfect image of us
The underlying struggles ignored without a trace

Who can we turn to
When every blind eye is turned
Who can we call for
When silence is called upon

They say We the People
But there is no we
We may all be human
But we will never be seen
