Last Month: (October 14th-November 16th) 

October 14th, 2023- Partial Solar Eclipse

A Solar Eclipse happens when the moon passes between the Sun and Earth, casting a shadow on Earth as a result. Solar Eclipses only happen during a new moon. There are usually five solar eclipses per year. October 14th was a super cloudy, rainy day, so it could not be seen in New York, but here is a picture of it in its full glory.

October 18th, 2023- Dwarf Planet Eris was easily seen in the night sky.

October 21st, 2023- Orionids Meteor Shower

The Orionids Meteor Shower started October 2nd and ended on the 30th. The peak of the meteor shower was on the 21st and 22nd. 

October 29th, 2023– Full Moon 

November 3rd, 2023- Jupiter was easily seen by observers.

Coming Up: (November 16th- December 14th)

November 18th, 2023- Leonids peak

November 21st, 2023- Alpha Monocerotids peak

December 14th, 2023- Geminid Meteor Shower Peak

 

 

This meteor shower is active between Dec. 4 and Dec. 17, but it will peak Dec. 14. It is a huge celestial event and will be easy to see, so go stargazing this upcoming month!

December 21st, 2023- Ursid Meteor Shower Peak 

December 21st, 2023- Winter Solstice 

The Ursids are projected to be the last meteor shower of the year and will be active from Dec. 13 to Dec. 24. It is scheduled to peak on Dec. 21.

Upcoming Constellations and Planets to See: (October 10th-November 16th) 

Next full moon: November 27th, Beaver’s Moon. 

November Constellations: Cepheus, Cassiopeia, Andromeda, and Pisces can all be seen in the Northern hemisphere’s sky this November.

November Planets: Uranus, Mars, Venus, Jupiter, and Neptune will all be visible this November.

December Constellations: Perseus, Triangulum and Aries can be seen in the North during December. 

December Planets: Jupiter, Venus, and Saturn will be visible this December.
