Golden Bear Chase

Golden Bear Chase

Faris Shamma, Journalist

The golden bear statue in the entrance of Vestal High is a staple of the fall and a symbol that almost everybody knows. But what do people think of this shining sculpture, and how was it made? Student Eyas Shamma thinks positively of it, while Nader Sabawi believes that “It is outdated.”
“Never really noticed it,” says Keith Dai. None of the students were sure exactly how the statue came to be where it was, however.
Custodian Mr. Frank Barton gave us some insightful information about the golden bear. According to him, “The bear is really old, and has been there since I started.” Using a hoist and some ladders, he remembers construction workers putting up the bear on the ledge in the atrium, the same type of statue that seniors use to take pictures with during graduation! Barton has no real opinions on it, and states that it is a “Nice looking sight.”
