Vestal students attend Area All State

Samson Wong

This past weekend Vestal Senior High School sent 13 people to Zone three Junior High Area All-State. The members who went say it was a wonderful experience!

To get into this event all of the students spent countless hours practicing solos for NYSSMA solo fest. This festival has students prepare a solo, level 1-6, and grades them. From levels 4-6 AAS selects the people with the highest scores.

This year our scores range from a 28 (equivalent of 100) on a level 4. To perfect scores of 100 on a level 6, the hardest level.  These students left for AAS on Friday the first and orchestra members spent about an hour rehearsing with guest conductor Mrs. Fish.

After we all went through a rigorous seating test. students were up at dawn the next day and the concert at 3 PM was a success. One member of the orchestra says they have never played with such a competent orchestra. Another member of our chorus feels that though the experience is time-consuming and tiring that it is a worthwhile experience. When asked what their favorite part of the experience was, the members responded and said they truly enjoyed meeting the people there and working with wonderful guest conductors.

We look forward to more faces joining us next year!
